The Warrawee Lecture 2013: Can I Fall Away?

The Warrawee Lecture is an annual event proudly brought to you by Warrawee Anglican Church providing a marvelous opportunity for believers from all church backgrounds in Northern Sydney to benefit from the expertise of an eminent scholar on a particular aspect of our Christian faith.

This year we are privileged to host the Rev Dr Peter O’Brien. Peter has been married to Mary, in Peter’s own description, ‘for 50 wonderful years’, and they have four children – David, Stephen, Libby and Sarah, and 10 grandchildren.

Peter became a Christian at the age of 19 after hearing the English preacher David Harris preaching on the robe of Christ’s righteousness at Eastwood Anglican Church. Peter later studied at Moore Theological College and was ordained as an Anglican minister before serving the Lord Jesus as a missionary in India for a decade.

Peter completed doctoral studies in New Testament at Manchester under renowned New Testament scholar F. F. Bruce during this time. Moore College became the O’Brien family home from 1974 until Peter’s retirement from full-time teaching in 2009.

Peter is a New Testament scholar of international reputation and has published more than a dozen books on mission and the letters of the New Testament, many of which have become benchmarks of evangelical scholarship.

The letter to the Hebrews has featured in each stage of Peter’s academic career. Peter taught a course on the letter to the Hebrews in his first year in India, at the University of Manchester he attended F. F. Bruce’s lectures on Hebrews, and on his retirement from full time teaching Peter’s own commentary on the letter to the Hebrews was released in the Pillar series.

Growing Healthy Kids Presentation & Discussion Evening, 13th March 2013

Wouldn’t it be great if growing healthy kids were as simple as going to Bunnings and purchasing the right products, weeding them and watering them? But most of us here tonight would have made the discovery that raising a family is a lot more complex than that.

Our children are as complex as they are delightful, and everyone who comes to the task of parenting has had a different experience of what it is to be a child themselves.

But what is it exactly that makes for a healthy kids? Is it merely a matter of what they eat? And can we even speak of what makes for healthy children apart from what it is that makes for a healthy family?

Well, tonight we’re going to be guided through these questions by our three eminently capable speakers. Ben, Colleen and Robert bring their professional expertise to this seminar, but they also bring their own experiences of raising children and understand the difficulties of putting their expertise into practice.

Dr. Robert Harwick studied medicine at the University of Sydney and is a well-known consultant pediatrician at the SAN. Robert pursues broad interests in his field, including newborn care, developmental and neurological functioning of children, allergies and evidence-based medicine. Rob Smith shares with us from Psalm 32 and we will consider what it is to be truly free. There is a freedom which only God can give, a freedom for which the Psalmist asks, thanks, and praises God. Let’s join the Psalmist and in asking, thanking and praising God for the true freedom God has given us in the Gospel of his Son.
